On 7 November 2024, COA-CONE Burns launched a transformative programme at Great Minds Academy in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about practices and behaviours that can lead to burn injuries, effective prevention strategies, and guidelines on first-aid measures for burns. It was a highly interactive session, with students asking insightful questions and participating actively.
Key topics addressed included common causes of burns, such as contact with flames, hot liquids, electricity, and chemicals, as well as steps to minimise risk. Practical first-aid techniques were highlighted, including cooling the burn with running water, covering it with a clean, non-stick cloth, and seeking medical attention immediately when necessary. The outreach also emphasised avoiding harmful practices, such as applying raw egg, salt, or other liquid ointments to burns.
A notable moment was when a female junior student, a burn survivor, shared her personal story. She described how hot liquid accidentally spilled on her while playing with her siblings and how inadequate medical attention led to complications. This deeply resonated with the students, reinforcing the importance of prevention and early intervention.
To extend this awareness beyond the school, educational flyers were distributed to the students, encouraging them to share the knowledge with their households and communities. Gift items were also provided as an incentive to promote safe practices and support their studies. The outreach ended on a high note, with students vowing to adopt safer practices in their daily lives and to share their newfound knowledge with friends and family.
