Stories of Hope and Resilience
Burns can be a devastating experience, affecting not only the individual but also their families and communities. At COA-CONE Burns, we believe in the power of human connection and the importance of sharing stories.
The narratives presented here are fiction-composites, drawn from the collective experiences of many. They are meant to inspire hope, empathy, and understanding. These stories are a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the impact that support can have on the journey to recovery.
Community Health Worker
Amina Bello
As a community health worker in Lagos, I see firsthand the challenges people face. Burns are a common problem, especially among women who cook with firewood. The COA-CONE Burns training equipped me with the knowledge to prevent burns, like teaching people about safe cooking practices and the importance of keeping children away from fire. I’ve also learned how to provide basic first aid for burns. Just last month, I helped a woman who had spilled hot oil on herself. By applying the techniques I learned, I managed to minimize the damage until she could get to a hospital. It’s small steps, but they make a big difference.
Nurse
Udo Okon
I’ve been a nurse in a rural hospital in Benue State for five years. We often dealt with burn cases, but our knowledge was limited. The COA-CONE Burns training was a game-changer. I learned advanced wound care techniques, pain management strategies, and the importance of early intervention as it relates specially to burns care. Now, I’m the go-to person for burn cases in the community. We’ve seen a significant improvement in patient outcomes. Just last month, we managed to save a young boy with severe burns, something that would have been unlikely before the training. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be able to provide better care for my patients.
Burn Survivor’s Mother
Lola Adebayo
When my son, Tobi, was badly burned in a fire, our world turned upside down. Medical bills piled up, and we didn’t know where to turn. COA-CONE Burns was our lifeline. They connected us with doctors, provided financial assistance, and offered counselling. Their support system helped us navigate the overwhelming challenges. Thanks to them, Tobi is recovering well, and we’re slowly rebuilding our lives.
Burn Survivor
Kalu Obi
The burn scarred more than just my skin. It took away my confidence and my livelihood. I felt isolated and alone. Then I joined the COA-CONE Burns survivors’ network. Connecting with others who understood what I was going through was a lifeline. With their support, I’ve learned to cope with the physical and emotional scars. I’ve also started a small business making crafts. It’s been a tough journey, but I’m slowly rebuilding my life. COA-CONE Burns has given me the strength to face the future.
Burn Survivor and Advocate
Ifeoma Nwadike
Being part of the COA-CONE Burns network has given me a voice. Together, we’ve advocated for better burn care policies in our community. We’ve organized awareness campaigns, lobbied government officials, and collaborated with healthcare providers. Our efforts have led to increased funding for burn centres and improved access to treatment. It’s amazing to see how collective action can create real change.
Burn Survivor and Support Group Member
Chidi Okoro
After my accident, I felt completely alone. The physical pain was bad enough, but the emotional scars were even worse. Joining the COA-CONE Burns survivors’ group was a turning point. Sharing experiences with others who understood what I was going through was incredibly healing. We’ve formed a strong bond, and we support each other in countless ways. It’s like finding a new family.
